The Same?

It doesn’t matter where you are in the world – when you’re on holiday the world looks different, sharper somehow. Things that at home you take for granted suddenly take on a new focus.

Sometimes – maybe especially when one is young – one looks at the night sky and marvels at the sight of the moon and the stars.

It never looks quite the same once you’re home.

The Same?

Can this be the same moon

we saw in Greece

Smiling at us so lovingly

from black skies

littered with thousands

of scattered stars

More constellations than I

would ever care to name

Can this be the same moon

we saw mirrored in

Aegean waters

The same moon that

hid from us at sunset

behind a tree in Nauplion

played peekaboo with

the mountainside

and went away unforgotten

at dawn

The same moon that’s

now peeping through

my sickly window

in a grey, suburban world

from an overcast

starless sky

And if it is the same

unchanged

am I?
