COVID-19 – THE NEW NORMAL

I’m hoping that it won’t be too long before we will be able to look back at this dark time as merely a hiccup in our lives.

I’m one of the 16,000 people who have entered the King Lear competition. The over 65s were invited to send in poems, stories and art they had created during lockdown.

Last week I received an email saying I could share my entry on social media.  So here’s one of the poems I sent.  Let me know if you like it.

The New Normal

We’re going to the cinema

I’m in a seat for one

The only person in my row

This is going to be fun

We’re packing for a holiday

Now travelling isn’t banned

The only problem I can see

Is finding a patch of sand

We won’t be able to stay too long

Because I’ll need the loo

They say just do it in the sea

I don’t fancy that, do you?

Little Jonny’s back at school

It’s still the same old place

He thinks it’s the same old teacher

But he can’t see her face

I’m in a queue for shopping

I’ve been waiting here all day

We’re all social distancing

It feels more like work than play

I’m looking forward to later

When we have our barbecue

Six of our friends are coming round

They’re bringing umbrellas too

I’m soon going to need an eye test

Not sure if I’m fit to drive

I think I’ll manage a hundred miles

And see if my eyes survive

The government are doing their best

There are fewer deaths each day

I’ve forgotten what life was like before

We’re getting used to things this way

Today I’m seeing the midwife

My baby soon is due

She’ll examine me remotely

What is a girl to do?

The park is full of litter

Looks like the common is too

There’s bottles, needles and condoms

And even some human poo

We were going to have a picnic

Think we’ll just go home instead

Best to stay home and watch TV

Or better still go to bed

Have a good Covid-free weekend. Thank you for reading my blog. See you next week!
